We went to Gran Canaria for a week in late February, specially for the famous Las Palmas Carnival. It coincided with the Festival of Almond Blossom – held all over the island as the almond trees begin to flower, marking the start of spring. For us, it eclipsed the Carnival. The towns of Tejeda and Valsequillo put on folk dancing and concerts. In the main squares, food stalls had been set up. We even tried almond wine – an acquired taste.
